How to Save Money on Sports Equipment

Sporting goods

Sports can be expensive, whether you do it as a hobby, you’re a serious amateur, or you’re trying to become a professional athlete.  Even if your sports pays you a little, unless you’re doing it fulltime for a living, odds are it’s not going to pay for itself if you need to replace your equipment.  There are many ways you can make your budget go further for sports equipment however.  By shopping creatively you can save money and buy perfectly good equipment which is high in quality and low in terms of wear and tear.  You also may be able to afford new equipment if you’re picky about features and don’t go for a lot of extras which are unimportant.

You Have Options!

A lot of people buy new equipment b ecause they think it’s the best with the most top of the line features.  But new equipment also costs a lot more than used equipment, and many used items are perfectly adequate for your needs, especially if you’re a hobbyist.  You’ll find great deals in a used sports equipment store for numerous items include baseball bats, basketballs, free weights, tennis rackets, golf clubs, and more.  Many of these items will be available for half or less than half of their full retail price.  If you’re a parent shopping for your child, this is a perfect option since your child doesn’t need to have the newest, shiniest equipment for his or her sport activity.
If you are set on buying new sports equipment, you can still save money on your equipment by shopping intelligently.  Sports equipment may run from basic to high tech, but you probably don’t need a lot of special features, particularly with technological devices like heart rate monitors.  Many athletes don’t even use a fraction of the features that are bundled into the products they buy.  If you’re willing to forego all those extra features, then you may find a much better deal on an item which delivers everything you actually need.

Differentiate!

Ask yourself what features are most important to you when you’re buying new equipment, and prioritize those features.  If you don’t need a feature as much, then why pay extra money for it?  This is also the case with exercise equipment like treadmills and elliptical trainers.  Oftentimes you can pay about half of what you’d expect to pay for such a device if you’re willing to forego a few nonessentials.
Sometimes people are tempted to use payday loans to buy equipment like this.  Generally speaking, this isn’t a good use for a payday loan.  If however you find a piece of equipment on sale for a great price for a limited time, and you could afford that sports equipment once you get paid, you may want to borrow money to take advantage of the deal while it lasts and then pay back the payday loan once you receive your paycheck.  Figure out whether the cost of the interest will outweigh the benefit of the sale or not first.  Anytime something will actually save you money, it’s potentially a good investment.  If it won’t save you money, then it isn’t a good investment.

Take Care!

Another way you can save money on sports equipment and exercise machines is simply to take care of the gear that you already have.  When you buy new gear to replace your old equipment, take care of it so that it will last.  Many athletes underestimate how long their equipment can last because they haven’t been taught to properly care for it.  If you’re buying equipment for yourself, all you have to do is learn proper equipment care—if you are buying equipment for your child, make sure you pass those skills down so that you don’t have to go back to the store too soon.
You may want to pay a little extra money to buy cleaning or maintenance supplies (such as glove oil for baseball gloves) in order to keep your equipment in working order as long as possible.  Ultimately this will save you money over the long term.  If you don’t already know how to take care of your equipment, then do some research online to figure out what you need to buy.
